From 26 Mar to 12 Apr, HART Hall in H Queen’s will house German gallery @spruethmagers’ new iteration of celebrated project ‘Eau de Cologne’ in Asia for the first time. ‘Eau de Cologne’ began as a series of exhibitions and three publications organised by Monika Sprüth from 1985 to 1993, featuring a group of women artists who established a discourse around art, feminism and power. The dialogue continues to be relevant today, and the new exhibition at HART Hall will showcase works from five artists who participated in the original project as well as three other equally influential female artists. @harthongkong #HQueens #HARTHall #SpruethMagers #artexhibition #gallery #hongkongartsmonth #hongkongart #hongkong Installation view: ’Eau de Cologne: Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, Cindy Sherman, Rosemarie Trockel’ Sprüth Magers, Berlin, 2015 Photography: Timo Ohler

Tao Hui's first solo exhibition at Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong ‘Rhythm and Senses’ opens on 10 Jan! • Using the language of video and installation, Tao Hui expresses collective experience, the focus of which is often social identity, gender status, ethnicity and cultural crisis. Running throughout his work is a sense of misplacement, prompting the audience to face their own cultural histories, living conditions and social identities. Exploring the pace of our present existence and our responses to such, Tao Hui navigates through four distinct works the unstable complications we face, our shifting perceptions as well as spiritual needs. • Opening on 10 Jan until 9 March, 2019! • Image: Video still, 'Pulsating Atom', 2019, single channel HD video, color, sound, 14 min 12 sec. • #edouardmalingue #soloexhibition #2019 #taohui @taohui_ @edouardmalingue

Visit Christian Lemmerz’s solo exhibition “Not I” at our H Queen’s space before this Saturday, December 22! Please note that our Hong Kong space will close for holidays and will reopen on January 4, 2019. ⁣ ⁣ Upon entering the virtual reality of Christian Lemmerz’s La Apparizione, one encounters the Crucified One. It appears to be a golden tortured body released from the cross and floating in deep darkness. His wounds reveal flesh and blood behind the glistening metal surface of his skin. Exposed to the viewer through the extreme visuality, the VR medium is a fusion between the suffering saint and human bordering on vulgarity. Throughout history, the representations of the Crucifixion of Christ take many shapes – from the suffering body and sacrifice in the Middle Ages to the conquering divine anatomical Christ in the Renaissance. All different depictions of Christ seem to merge across high and low culture, constituting one ultimate icon in the work. ⁣ ⁣ Image courtesy: the artist, Khora Contemporary and Tang Contemporary Art.

CURRENT EXHIBITION (Hong Kong) | Christian Lemmerz “Not I” | 24.11 – 29.12.2018 .
Thanks to everyone who visited the opening of @christianlemmerz ’s solo exhibition last Saturday! The exhibition title refers to a short dramatic monologue written by Samuel Beckett in 1973. It is one of Beckett’s late works and its title comes from the character's repeated denial that the events she describes or alludes to happened to her. .
It has been more than 30 years since Lemmerz began his investigation of the body and its metaphysical nature. In the early 1990s he resumed his work with classical medium of marble, creating an ongoing series of sculptures. The exhibition features series of drawings, sculptures and recently made VR work. .
On view through December 29 at our @hqueenshk space.

An exhibition of work by Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, John McCracken, and Fred Sandback, four American artists associated with Minimalism, opens Wednesday, November 14 from 6-8 PM at the Hong Kong gallery. Each artist will be represented by a focused presentation of his work in a single room, allowing visitors to experience both the commonalities and distinctions in the individual approaches to reductive form, material, color, and space. . Donald Judd, with the intention of creating straightforward work that could assume a direct material and physical "presence" without recourse to grand philosophical statements, eschewed the classical ideals of representational sculpture to create a rigorous visual vocabulary that sought clear and definite objects as its primary mode of articulation. . Dan Flavin produced a singularly consistent and prodigious body of work that utilized commercially available fluorescent lamps to create installations, or "situations," as he preferred to call them, of light and color. . John McCracken’s work combines the restrained formal qualities of Minimalist sculpture with a distinctly Los Angeles sensibility expressed through color, form, and finish. . Fred Sandback is known for sculptures that outline planes and volumes in space. Though he employed metal wire and elastic cord early in his career, the artist soon dispensed with mass and weight by using acrylic yarn to create works that address their physical surroundings, the "pedestrian space," as Sandback called it, of everyday life. ___ Pictured: Installation view, Flavin, Judd, McCracken, Sandback, David Zwirner, Hong Kong, 2018. #DanFlavin #DonaldJudd #JohnMcCracken #FredSandback #DavidZwirnerHongKong #Hqueens #DavidZwirner @juddfoundation

“I think I’m one of those people who, for better or worse, really believes in some of the simplest materials as being the best ones to think through.” ––Dan Flavin in conversation with Tiffany Bell, 1982. . The term Minimalism came to denote a new abstract style of work that emerged in New York and Los Angeles in the 1960s and which radically reconfigured the possibilities of sculpture. Since its inception, David Zwirner has featured critically acclaimed exhibitions devoted to the work of artists associated with Minimal art and is recognized as one of the foremost international galleries to present this work to the public. Highlighting historically significant installations, this exhibition is the first major presentation of Minimal art to be on view in Hong Kong. Flavin, Judd, McCracken, Sandback will be on view through December 21. The Hong Kong gallery will be open Sunday, November 25 from 11-7 PM. ___ Pictured from left: Dan Flavin, untitled (to the real Dan Hill) 1a, 1978. We’re pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition at #PaceGallery in Hong Kong‘s H Queen’s building, “Mao Yan: By the Edge,” opening with a public reception on 7 June from 6–8 PM. This is Mao Yan’s first exhibition in #HongKong, and will feature ten works completed in 2018. – Under his father’s influence, #MaoYan began studying painting at an early age. By the time he was a teenager he had already mastered advanced techniques, and his talent was recognized even before he was admitted to the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1991, after graduating from the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Mao Yan began teaching at Nanjing University of the Arts, where he began to delve into portraiture. In his article Explorations in Realism, renowned art critic Li Xianting named Mao Yan as the representative of Chinese Neo-realism, stating that his works depict the "portraits of a generation whose emotions are gradually disappearing." – Image: ©️ Mao Yan

#SixWeeksSixDecades of Billy Apple Since the early 1980s, Apple has complemented his installation practice with text-based works that draw attention to the art system and highlight the artist’s social networks. These relationships are represented in the exhibition with works such as Bartered (Untransacted) (1984/2018), I.O.U. (Untransacted) (1987/2018), and Art and Life Business Plan (1985/2018), a composition created by dividing the surface of the canvas into the constituent parts of the golden ratio and weighting the colour according to the equivalent ratios of white and black to create the work's grey scale. ———————————————————————— Current exhibition @rossiandrossi Hong Kong: Billy Apple ® Six Decades 1962-2018. When you first enter ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief World Tour’ in the M+ Pavilion, you come face to face with this yellow wall of exhibition posters. These posters aren’t just promotional, but are part of the exhibition itself. 👇 . If you look closely, you’ll see that they are the same posters from when the exhibition premiered at the Venice Biennale last year. They were then being re-made in Hong Kong—old Venice graffiti and all. This not only reflects the ‘world tour’ concept in the exhibition’s title, but is also a reference to the fictional character from the work ‘Palazzo Gundane (homage to the myth-maker who fell to earth)’. This work pays tribute to a fake news story about a South African musician named Boomtown Gundane, who allegedly made a song titled ‘Yes We Do’ in response to the charity single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ In Young’s fictional recreation, Boomtown Gundane has toured the world with this response song. 這些展覽海報不單表現了「世界巡迴演」的概念,亦與作品《Palazzo Gundane (homage to the myth-maker who fell to earth)》中的虛構人物「Boomtown Gundane」有關連。

The next M+ exhibition, straight from the Venice Biennale: ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief World Tour’! 🎺🎺 . Conceived by multidisciplinary Hong Kong artist Samson Young, ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief World Tour’ offers a unique audiovisual experience with sculptures, objects, videos, sound installations, and site-specific pieces. The ‘songs for disaster relief’ in the title refers to charity singles—purpose-made recordings to raising funds and awareness for charitable causes. In this exhibition, Young draws on this genre and explores the ideologies behind it. 🎤🎧 . In 2017, Young represented Hong Kong with the premiere of this exhibition at the 57th Venice Biennale under the title ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief’. You’ll see that the Hong Kong version is slightly different—with new settings, new layouts, and even a new artwork! . When: 09.02.2018 – 06.05.2018 Where: M+ Pavilion . Coming soon to David Zwirner Hong Kong: an exhibition by Wolfgang Tillmans, presenting recent developments in his portraiture and still lifes along with figurative scenes and abstract photographs. Featuring many new works not publicly shown before, the show will juxtapose pictures of intimacy and friendship with views of the world at large. Dates: March 26–May 12, 2018. Join us for the private view at the gallery on Monday, March 26, 6–8 PM. … Few artists have shaped the scope of contemporary art and influenced a younger generation more than Tillmans. Since the early 1990s, his works have epitomized a new kind of subjectivity in photography, pairing intimacy and playfulness with social critique and the persistent questioning of existing values and hierarchies. His practice continues to address the fundamental question of what it means to create pictures in an increasingly image-saturated world. … On March 28, join Tillmans at the gallery for a signing of the accompanying exhibition catalogue. Pat Steir’s new series, “For Hong Kong” (2017–2018), was created in homage to the artistic and literary heritage of East Asian cultures. Distinguished by a vertical, central fissure that the artist refers to as a “split,” Steir’s paintings are part of an ongoing body of work called “Kairos,” which debuted in September 2017 in an exhibition at our New York gallery. Her signature pouring technique reflects Steir’s intuitive relationship with Eastern thought, disclosing a Zen-like emptiness that simultaneously suggests a sensuous fullness. – – Lévy Gorvy is presenting four of the works from Steir’s new series at Art Basel Hong Kong, including ‘Blue Mauve for Hong Kong’, pictured above. – Art Basel Hong Kong, March 29 – 31, Hong Kong, Convention & Exhibition Centre – #LévyGorvy #LevyGorvy #PatSteir #Steir #ABHK #ArtBaselHongKong #BaselHongKong #ABHK2018 #HKCEC

"Something There and Never There 那是有又沒有" Leung Chi Wo 梁志和 – 23.1 – 10.3.2018 – Opening Reception:20.1.2018, Saturday, 4 – 6:30pm Artist will be present. – “Something There and Never There” is the solo exhibition of Leung Chi Wo, centred around the tumultuous year of 1967 in Hong Kong. Linking his own biography to the history of the city, Leung constructs parallel worlds that connect vastly different events, characters and objects together. Civilian riots and vintage Volkswagen, student protests and Charlie Chaplin’s film, political propaganda and songs by The Beatles: they all crossed paths by coincidence without our knowledge or entering into official history. By using diverse media including photography, video, and installations comprising of found images, music and objects from 1967, Leung performs a deep engagement with a subjective history through archival research, conceptual intervention and poetic re-imagination. The artist demonstrates that history is full of ambivalence, absurdity and ambiguities, and that through re-enacting and reconstructing these episodes in 1967, one can as well reflect on the current socio-political situation in Hong Kong. – Details 詳情: blindspotgallery.com/exhibition/something-there-and-never-there #Blindspotgallery #hongkongartist #LeungChiWo #梁志和 #1967riots #hongkonghistory #installation #photography #thebeatles #propaganda #charliechaplin #volkswagenbeetle
