HE’S BACK! Hero and childhood friend of the Chinese diaspora, Old Master Q returns to Sotheby’s #HongKong! The occasion presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the series’ earliest comic cover artwork in existence – Rock’ n Roll – through an online-only auction that runs from 1-10 August! Published in 1964 as the cover of the second issue of Old Master Q, this rare vintage original by the late Alphonso Wong fully encapsulates the playfulness of the 3 legendary comic characters while reflecting the author’s youthful aspirations and passion for pop music! Exhibition: 10-25 August at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery. To bid online: https://bit.ly/2vnIifv #oldmasterq #老夫子

Yes it looks like a supermarket but no, things are not always what they seem: each item on the shelves is completely empty, consisting only of its packaging. To buy, or not to buy? That is the question… . ‘XUZHEN SUPERMARKET’ is the first ever concept to be auctioned as an artwork in Asia. A humorous yet subversive work by leading Chinese Contemporary artist XU ZHEN ® (@xuzhenmadein), it replicates a Chinese convenience store but offers entirely empty merchandise for sale. For visitors, each act of purchasing –or not purchasing – and the corresponding thought-process behind –contributes to a playful yet penetrating critique on consumerism, advertising and global capitalism. . Come along and join us at the opening this weekend in #Shanghai (1-2 Sep), before it travels to #Beijing (4-5 Sep) and #HongKong (28-30 Sep). . This work will be presented at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale on 30 Sep in Hong Kong. . #SothebysContemporary @madeincompany

This magnificent vase is one of the most complex porcelains ever commissioned by the #Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736 to 1795). Carved and exquisitely painted with four pairs of fish, Rococo-inspired motifs and visual components inspired by China’s vast history, it is a lavish manifestation of the Emperor’s eagerness to align the majesty of his epoch with the great rulers of China’s past. In pristine condition, the vase is the pair to the famous ‘Bainbridge Vase’ of 2010, and will open Sotheby’s Chinese Works of Art sales in #HongKong this autumn. The work is presented here by Nicolas Chow, Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia and Worldwide Head of Chinese Works of Art. #TheYamanakaVase #SothebysAsianArt 📷@thevalue.com_official

We’re pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition at #PaceGallery in Hong Kong‘s H Queen’s building, “Mao Yan: By the Edge,” opening with a public reception on 7 June from 6–8 PM. This is Mao Yan’s first exhibition in #HongKong, and will feature ten works completed in 2018. – Under his father’s influence, #MaoYan began studying painting at an early age. By the time he was a teenager he had already mastered advanced techniques, and his talent was recognized even before he was admitted to the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1991, after graduating from the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Mao Yan began teaching at Nanjing University of the Arts, where he began to delve into portraiture. In his article Explorations in Realism, renowned art critic Li Xianting named Mao Yan as the representative of Chinese Neo-realism, stating that his works depict the "portraits of a generation whose emotions are gradually disappearing." – Image: ©️ Mao Yan

#SixWeeksSixDecades of Billy Apple Since the early 1980s, Apple has complemented his installation practice with text-based works that draw attention to the art system and highlight the artist’s social networks. These relationships are represented in the exhibition with works such as Bartered (Untransacted) (1984/2018), I.O.U. (Untransacted) (1987/2018), and Art and Life Business Plan (1985/2018), a composition created by dividing the surface of the canvas into the constituent parts of the golden ratio and weighting the colour according to the equivalent ratios of white and black to create the work's grey scale. ———————————————————————— Current exhibition @rossiandrossi Hong Kong: Billy Apple ® Six Decades 1962-2018. "Something There and Never There 那是有又沒有" Leung Chi Wo 梁志和 – 23.1 – 10.3.2018 – Opening Reception:20.1.2018, Saturday, 4 – 6:30pm Artist will be present. – “Something There and Never There” is the solo exhibition of Leung Chi Wo, centred around the tumultuous year of 1967 in Hong Kong. Linking his own biography to the history of the city, Leung constructs parallel worlds that connect vastly different events, characters and objects together. Civilian riots and vintage Volkswagen, student protests and Charlie Chaplin’s film, political propaganda and songs by The Beatles: they all crossed paths by coincidence without our knowledge or entering into official history. By using diverse media including photography, video, and installations comprising of found images, music and objects from 1967, Leung performs a deep engagement with a subjective history through archival research, conceptual intervention and poetic re-imagination. The artist demonstrates that history is full of ambivalence, absurdity and ambiguities, and that through re-enacting and reconstructing these episodes in 1967, one can as well reflect on the current socio-political situation in Hong Kong. – Details 詳情: blindspotgallery.com/exhibition/something-there-and-never-there #Blindspotgallery #hongkongartist #LeungChiWo #梁志和 #1967riots #hongkonghistory #installation #photography #thebeatles #propaganda #charliechaplin #volkswagenbeetle

This is Wang Xin’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong and new work is showcased. _ Wang Xin has a penchant for challenging the archaic structure of the art world, as she often takes its institutions, systems, and dogma as her material. Wang Xin is also a certified hypnotist, and uses her work to alter a viewer’s perception and affect their subconscious. Her signature use of rose pink adds to the hypnotising effect, and imbues a sense of fervency within her work. _ #WangXin #TheMustSeeArtShow #deSarthe #deSartheGallery #SICD #HongKong #HK #HongKongArt #HKart #Contemporary #ContemporaryArt #ContemporaryArts #ContemporaryArtist #ContemporaryArtists #Art #Arts #ArtExhibition #Exhibitions #ArtShow #ArtEvent #ArtWorks #LoveArt #Installation #Installations #ArtInstallation #Residency #HongKongArtScene #AsianArtScene #ArtGallery

[ KAF | What’s Next ] KAF will unveil a new exhibition, ‘The Garden’, at chi art space in Clear Water Bay on 1 September! Local curator/artist #EnochCheng and five other Hong Kong-based artists – #ShaneAspegren, #CheukWingNam, #VvzelaKook, #AndrewLuk, and #SamuelAdamSwope – will present their KAF-commissioned works, alongside creations by #NeïlBeloufa, #CaiKai, and #IanCheng. ‘The Garden’ is an exhibition like a garden in a glasshouse, but without plants. It is a garden not remembered in time; it is nature beyond the harmony of greenery. It is a glasshouse that celebrates motions in the environment and invites everyone to observe a space that is constantly changing. @ac_kaf @k11artfoundation #clearwaterbay #hongkongart #contemporaryart #artinhk #kafthegarden

#HongHao is a Beijing-based artist known for transforming everyday objects into abstract paintings. Using mass-produced materials and found objects, Hong reduces these items to their essential shape, and by diluting each item to its contours on the canvas, he creates abstract forms from specific realities. – Hong Hao will be debuting all new works in a solo exhibition opening ‪8th September‬ at #PaceGallery in Hong Kong. Join us for the opening ‪on 7th September from 6–8 PM‬ at 15C Entertainment Building, 30 Queens Road Central. – Image: Hong Hao, detail of "Everchanging Appearance No.9", 2017 acrylic, molding material and dust on canvas 170 cm x 100 cm (66-15/16" x 39-3/8") © Hong Hao

Upcoming [TRAILER] Toshio Matsumoto: Everything Visible Is Empty, opening 9 September, on view through — 18 November 2017. For this exhibition, Empty Gallery has worked closely with the late artist’s archivist in order to present a selection of rarely screened works including Matsumoto’s early documentaries Nishijin and Song of Stone, his landmark expanded cinema work for three projectors, For The Damaged Right Eye, and a selection of his influential abstract short films – all in newly restored versions. Eschewing an organizational approach based on stylistic or chronological development, Everything Visible Is Empty instead seeks to embrace Matsumoto’s critique of “the visible” as a structuring principle, presenting an arrangement of works from different eras and contexts which are nevertheless connected through their shared inquiry into the social construction of history and the agency of the subject within this construction. Considered by no less an authority than new-wave director Nagisa Oshima as his only rival for aesthetic and ideological influence within Japan’s dynamic scene of post-war image makers, Toshio Matsumoto’s films and theoretical writings form an essential but often overlooked contribution to the global history of experimental film and video art which has only just begun to be re-evaluated in recent years. "Animal Regulation IV No. 18" (2016) by #Chinese #Artist Liu Di. C-Print. The exhibition "Break with Convention" opens today at Pékin Fine Arts in Hong Kong, and is on view until November 29th. Liu Di believes that “by violating the rules of common sense, we can break the hypnotic trance induced by familiar reality.” Liu uses digitally manipulated photographs to investigate the friction between the natural world and urban residents in China. His series “Animal Regulation” features large and cartoon-like wild animals. He explains that these works look at a mutually destructive relationship through ruins of both human and animal living spaces. Image courtesy of @pekinfineartsgallery. This exhibition serves as a continuation of Lv’s first solo exhibition “Spectacle” in Hong Kong last year. To experience the art of Leang Seckon is to engage with an epic tale and a deep personal narrative of an artist coming to terms with a dark past, while keeping a vigilant, mindful eye in the present. Historic symbols and motifs from ancient Angkorian and Khmer periods are juxtaposed with those of contemporary Cambodia. From discarded materials found and collected, Seckon breathes new life into spent debris, creating complex compositions that are collaged, painted, and sewn onto canvas in layers of time that solidify, like stratified rock, a palpable record of the Cambodian experience. Leang Seckon ‘When Head and Body Unite' at Rossi & Rossi Hong Kong, opening 23 September. #leangseckon #cambodianart #exhibition #HKIG #contemporaryart #rossiandrossi #wongchukhang #hongkong #gallery #southisland #paintings
