Visit Christian Lemmerz’s solo exhibition “Not I” at our H Queen’s space before this Saturday, December 22! Please note that our Hong Kong space will close for holidays and will reopen on January 4, 2019. ⁣ ⁣ Upon entering the virtual reality of Christian Lemmerz’s La Apparizione, one encounters the Crucified One. It appears to be a golden tortured body released from the cross and floating in deep darkness. His wounds reveal flesh and blood behind the glistening metal surface of his skin. Exposed to the viewer through the extreme visuality, the VR medium is a fusion between the suffering saint and human bordering on vulgarity. Throughout history, the representations of the Crucifixion of Christ take many shapes – from the suffering body and sacrifice in the Middle Ages to the conquering divine anatomical Christ in the Renaissance. All different depictions of Christ seem to merge across high and low culture, constituting one ultimate icon in the work. ⁣ ⁣ Image courtesy: the artist, Khora Contemporary and Tang Contemporary Art.

CURRENT EXHIBITION (Hong Kong) | Christian Lemmerz “Not I” | 24.11 – 29.12.2018 .
Thanks to everyone who visited the opening of @christianlemmerz ’s solo exhibition last Saturday! The exhibition title refers to a short dramatic monologue written by Samuel Beckett in 1973. It is one of Beckett’s late works and its title comes from the character's repeated denial that the events she describes or alludes to happened to her. .
It has been more than 30 years since Lemmerz began his investigation of the body and its metaphysical nature. In the early 1990s he resumed his work with classical medium of marble, creating an ongoing series of sculptures. The exhibition features series of drawings, sculptures and recently made VR work. .
On view through December 29 at our @hqueenshk space.

An exhibition of work by Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, John McCracken, and Fred Sandback, four American artists associated with Minimalism, opens Wednesday, November 14 from 6-8 PM at the Hong Kong gallery. Each artist will be represented by a focused presentation of his work in a single room, allowing visitors to experience both the commonalities and distinctions in the individual approaches to reductive form, material, color, and space. . Donald Judd, with the intention of creating straightforward work that could assume a direct material and physical "presence" without recourse to grand philosophical statements, eschewed the classical ideals of representational sculpture to create a rigorous visual vocabulary that sought clear and definite objects as its primary mode of articulation. . Dan Flavin produced a singularly consistent and prodigious body of work that utilized commercially available fluorescent lamps to create installations, or "situations," as he preferred to call them, of light and color. . John McCracken’s work combines the restrained formal qualities of Minimalist sculpture with a distinctly Los Angeles sensibility expressed through color, form, and finish. . Fred Sandback is known for sculptures that outline planes and volumes in space. Though he employed metal wire and elastic cord early in his career, the artist soon dispensed with mass and weight by using acrylic yarn to create works that address their physical surroundings, the "pedestrian space," as Sandback called it, of everyday life. ___ Pictured: Installation view, Flavin, Judd, McCracken, Sandback, David Zwirner, Hong Kong, 2018. #DanFlavin #DonaldJudd #JohnMcCracken #FredSandback #DavidZwirnerHongKong #Hqueens #DavidZwirner @juddfoundation

“I think I’m one of those people who, for better or worse, really believes in some of the simplest materials as being the best ones to think through.” ––Dan Flavin in conversation with Tiffany Bell, 1982. . The term Minimalism came to denote a new abstract style of work that emerged in New York and Los Angeles in the 1960s and which radically reconfigured the possibilities of sculpture. Since its inception, David Zwirner has featured critically acclaimed exhibitions devoted to the work of artists associated with Minimal art and is recognized as one of the foremost international galleries to present this work to the public. Highlighting historically significant installations, this exhibition is the first major presentation of Minimal art to be on view in Hong Kong. Flavin, Judd, McCracken, Sandback will be on view through December 21. The Hong Kong gallery will be open Sunday, November 25 from 11-7 PM. ___ Pictured from left: Dan Flavin, untitled (to the real Dan Hill) 1a, 1978. We're pleased to present "Keith Coventry: Golden Arches," opening Wednesday, 22 November at our Hong Kong gallery. – #KeithCoventry’s work filters everyday subject matter, such as fast food, the British Monarchy, and addiction through the lens of modernist idealism. This exhibition is a continuation of Coventry's visual experimentation with the #McDonalds logo. He started manipulating the logo in 2000, inspired by the discarded fast-food wrappers that accumulated outside his studio. – Join us for the opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22 at #PaceGallery, 15C Entertainment Building, 30 Queens Road Central, Hong Kong. – Image: Keith Coventry, "Golden Arches XVII," 2017, gesso, glass, wood, bronze, and gold. 133 cm x 110 cm x 7 cm (52-3/8" x 43-5/16" x 2-3/4"), framed © Keith Coventry

[ KAF | What’s Next ] KAF will unveil a new exhibition, ‘The Garden’, at chi art space in Clear Water Bay on 1 September! Local curator/artist #EnochCheng and five other Hong Kong-based artists – #ShaneAspegren, #CheukWingNam, #VvzelaKook, #AndrewLuk, and #SamuelAdamSwope – will present their KAF-commissioned works, alongside creations by #NeïlBeloufa, #CaiKai, and #IanCheng. ‘The Garden’ is an exhibition like a garden in a glasshouse, but without plants. It is a garden not remembered in time; it is nature beyond the harmony of greenery. It is a glasshouse that celebrates motions in the environment and invites everyone to observe a space that is constantly changing. @ac_kaf @k11artfoundation #clearwaterbay #hongkongart #contemporaryart #artinhk #kafthegarden

#HongHao is a Beijing-based artist known for transforming everyday objects into abstract paintings. Using mass-produced materials and found objects, Hong reduces these items to their essential shape, and by diluting each item to its contours on the canvas, he creates abstract forms from specific realities. – Hong Hao will be debuting all new works in a solo exhibition opening ‪8th September‬ at #PaceGallery in Hong Kong. Join us for the opening ‪on 7th September from 6–8 PM‬ at 15C Entertainment Building, 30 Queens Road Central. – Image: Hong Hao, detail of "Everchanging Appearance No.9", 2017 acrylic, molding material and dust on canvas 170 cm x 100 cm (66-15/16" x 39-3/8") © Hong Hao

Upcoming [TRAILER] Toshio Matsumoto: Everything Visible Is Empty, opening 9 September, on view through — 18 November 2017. For this exhibition, Empty Gallery has worked closely with the late artist’s archivist in order to present a selection of rarely screened works including Matsumoto’s early documentaries Nishijin and Song of Stone, his landmark expanded cinema work for three projectors, For The Damaged Right Eye, and a selection of his influential abstract short films – all in newly restored versions. Eschewing an organizational approach based on stylistic or chronological development, Everything Visible Is Empty instead seeks to embrace Matsumoto’s critique of “the visible” as a structuring principle, presenting an arrangement of works from different eras and contexts which are nevertheless connected through their shared inquiry into the social construction of history and the agency of the subject within this construction. Considered by no less an authority than new-wave director Nagisa Oshima as his only rival for aesthetic and ideological influence within Japan’s dynamic scene of post-war image makers, Toshio Matsumoto’s films and theoretical writings form an essential but often overlooked contribution to the global history of experimental film and video art which has only just begun to be re-evaluated in recent years. #countdown #vernissage Pearl Lam Galleries is delighted to present a solo exhibition by internationally renowned #Korean artist Chun Kwang Young (b. 1944), covering works created from the mid-1970s to the mid-2000s, as well as some exciting new pieces. This important retrospective #exhibition investigates the evolution of the artist’s oeuvre—from his all-over #abstract paintings of the 1970s and 1980s to the pivotal early works of the 1990s, which are at the root of Chun’s celebrated long-running Aggregation series, featuring his distinctive use of #triangular, string-tied parcels of mulberry paper from old #Korean books. "Animal Regulation IV No. 18" (2016) by #Chinese #Artist Liu Di. C-Print. The exhibition "Break with Convention" opens today at Pékin Fine Arts in Hong Kong, and is on view until November 29th. Liu Di believes that “by violating the rules of common sense, we can break the hypnotic trance induced by familiar reality.” Liu uses digitally manipulated photographs to investigate the friction between the natural world and urban residents in China. His series “Animal Regulation” features large and cartoon-like wild animals. He explains that these works look at a mutually destructive relationship through ruins of both human and animal living spaces. Image courtesy of @pekinfineartsgallery. This exhibition serves as a continuation of Lv’s first solo exhibition “Spectacle” in Hong Kong last year. While Lv’s creations are largely about social realism, they are also steeped in a liberal dejection within the context of Chinese contemporary art. #contemporaryart #oilpainting #chinese #contemporarychinese #artist #exhibition #mixedmedia #contemporarybyangelali #gallery #cbal #lvshanchuan #abstract #art #hkartgal

To experience the art of Leang Seckon is to engage with an epic tale and a deep personal narrative of an artist coming to terms with a dark past, while keeping a vigilant, mindful eye in the present. Historic symbols and motifs from ancient Angkorian and Khmer periods are juxtaposed with those of contemporary Cambodia. From discarded materials found and collected, Seckon breathes new life into spent debris, creating complex compositions that are collaged, painted, and sewn onto canvas in layers of time that solidify, like stratified rock, a palpable record of the Cambodian experience. Leang Seckon ‘When Head and Body Unite' at Rossi & Rossi Hong Kong, opening 23 September. #leangseckon #cambodianart #exhibition #HKIG #contemporaryart #rossiandrossi #wongchukhang #hongkong #gallery #southisland #paintings
