HE’S BACK! Hero and childhood friend of the Chinese diaspora, Old Master Q returns to Sotheby’s #HongKong! Published in 1964 as the cover of the second issue of Old Master Q, this rare vintage original by the late Alphonso Wong fully encapsulates the playfulness of the 3 legendary comic characters while reflecting the author’s youthful aspirations and passion for pop music! Yes it looks like a supermarket but no, things are not always what they seem: each item on the shelves is completely empty, consisting only of its packaging. To buy, or not to buy? That is the question… . ‘XUZHEN SUPERMARKET’ is the first ever concept to be auctioned as an artwork in Asia. A humorous yet subversive work by leading Chinese Contemporary artist XU ZHEN ® (@xuzhenmadein), it replicates a Chinese convenience store but offers entirely empty merchandise for sale. For visitors, each act of purchasing –or not purchasing – and the corresponding thought-process behind –contributes to a playful yet penetrating critique on consumerism, advertising and global capitalism. . Come along and join us at the opening this weekend in #Shanghai (1-2 Sep), before it travels to #Beijing (4-5 Sep) and #HongKong (28-30 Sep). . This work will be presented at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale on 30 Sep in Hong Kong. . #SothebysContemporary @madeincompany

This magnificent vase is one of the most complex porcelains ever commissioned by the #Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736 to 1795). Carved and exquisitely painted with four pairs of fish, Rococo-inspired motifs and visual components inspired by China’s vast history, it is a lavish manifestation of the Emperor’s eagerness to align the majesty of his epoch with the great rulers of China’s past. In pristine condition, the vase is the pair to the famous ‘Bainbridge Vase’ of 2010, and will open Sotheby’s Chinese Works of Art sales in #HongKong this autumn. The work is presented here by Nicolas Chow, Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia and Worldwide Head of Chinese Works of Art. #TheYamanakaVase #SothebysAsianArt 📷@thevalue.com_official

We’re pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition at #PaceGallery in Hong Kong‘s H Queen’s building, “Mao Yan: By the Edge,” opening with a public reception on 7 June from 6–8 PM. This is Mao Yan’s first exhibition in #HongKong, and will feature ten works completed in 2018. – Under his father’s influence, #MaoYan began studying painting at an early age. By the time he was a teenager he had already mastered advanced techniques, and his talent was recognized even before he was admitted to the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1991, after graduating from the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Mao Yan began teaching at Nanjing University of the Arts, where he began to delve into portraiture. In his article Explorations in Realism, renowned art critic Li Xianting named Mao Yan as the representative of Chinese Neo-realism, stating that his works depict the "portraits of a generation whose emotions are gradually disappearing." – Image: ©️ Mao Yan

#SixWeeksSixDecades of Billy Apple Since the early 1980s, Apple has complemented his installation practice with text-based works that draw attention to the art system and highlight the artist’s social networks. These relationships are represented in the exhibition with works such as Bartered (Untransacted) (1984/2018), I.O.U. (Untransacted) (1987/2018), and Art and Life Business Plan (1985/2018), a composition created by dividing the surface of the canvas into the constituent parts of the golden ratio and weighting the colour according to the equivalent ratios of white and black to create the work's grey scale. ———————————————————————— Current exhibition @rossiandrossi Hong Kong: Billy Apple ® Six Decades 1962-2018. Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong is now open with its inaugural exhibition of new works by Mark Bradford. Follow the link in our Stories to explore the exhibition in VR. – Bradford has long been interested in the ways in which populations, and particularly marginalized communities, are grouped or quantified. In a number of new large-scale paintings, Bradford returns to the motif of the ‘map’ as a point of departure for mining this topic. These works are not rendered from accurate navigational tools; instead Bradford draws his reference material from archival sources, including transit maps, advertising and outdated maps used on bond securities. His base images are therefore only ever subjective representations of a city’s layout, which unintentionally communicate how urban spaces are divided accordingly to the infrastructures of power. – Bradford has discussed, in relation to his map paintings, how elements of civic planning – including transit lines and water systems – were diverted around communities of wealth, but built directly through others. Using his signature vernacular of selectively layering, scoring and bleaching areas of his canvas’s surface, and employing networks of colored string, Bradford traces the human presence in these urban geographies and emphasizes the disparate communities and hidden social injustices to which his maps refer. New works by Mark Bradford at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong opening this Monday 26 March 2018. – Join us to celebrate the inaugural exhibition in our Hong Kong space by the acclaimed American artist renowned for his large, abstract, mixed-media paintings, which often incorporate ephemera and discarded elements of urban life. This exhibition comes on the heels of a number of major public projects including ‘Tomorrow Is Another Day,’ Bradford’s widely-lauded exhibition for the United States Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale (which will travel to The Baltimore Museum of Art (@baltimoremuseumofart) in September); ‘Pickett’s Charge,’ a monumental cyclorama commissioned for the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (@hirshhorn)in Washington, D.C.; and a 32-panel, site-specific painting of the entire US Constitution for the new American Embassy in London. The new works presented in Hong Kong are a continuation of the themes Bradford has explored throughout his entire career, most prominently the distribution and representation of power within societal structures. – The exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong will be on view through 12 May 2018, spanning both 15th and 16th stories of the new H Queen’s (@hqueenshk) building.

‘Not Up for debate’ – tomorrow is the final day to view Mark Bradford’s exhibition of new works at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong. – Bradford has long been interested in the ways in which populations, and particularly marginalized communities, are grouped or quantified. Using his signature vernacular of selectively layering, scoring and bleaching areas of his canvas’s surface, and employing networks of colored string, Bradford traces the human presence in these urban geographies and emphasizes the disparate communities and hidden social injustices to which his maps refer. – ‘I have always been interested in the notion of community and, in the most fundamental way, in the things that separate certain groups from others,’ Bradford has said. ‘Traditionally, maps are these finite, informational tools, but in these works they evoke questions about the individuals inhabiting these spaces, and about what these printed lines aren’t necessarily showing us.’ Artist’s Reception: Friday, 25 May 2018, 6 to 8pm Hanart TZ Gallery is honoured to present Xu Longsen’s latest solo exhibition, Mountains in the Clouds. The opening reception will take place in the presence of the artist on Friday, 25 May 2018, from 6-8pm, at Hanart TZ Gallery. Running concurrently with Xu Longsen’s groundbreaking overseas solo exhibition Light of Heaven, presented by the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago (March through June 2018), Mountains in the Clouds at Hanart TZ Gallery will showcase Xu’s most important works of his recent oeuvre, including the monumental installation Shanshui Totem. Comprised of massive ‘landscape pillars’ measuring over three metres high, Xu’s artwork acts as its own intervention in the gallery space, conjuring a spiritual landscape through which one can ‘leisurely wander’. Together with Shanshui Totem and a select group of Xu’s monumental landscape paintings, Mountains in the Clouds also marks the Hong Kong debut of Xu’s new group of semi-abstract works, Flower Series, completed just this year, in which the artist explores further experimental breakthroughs in the style, technique and language of ink painting. 展期 Exhibition Period 25/5 – 7/7/2018 #hanarttzgallery #hanart #xulongsen #inkart #landscapeart #shanshui #mountainsintheclouds

When you first enter ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief World Tour’ in the M+ Pavilion, you come face to face with this yellow wall of exhibition posters. These posters aren’t just promotional, but are part of the exhibition itself. 👇 . If you look closely, you’ll see that they are the same posters from when the exhibition premiered at the Venice Biennale last year. They were then being re-made in Hong Kong—old Venice graffiti and all. This not only reflects the ‘world tour’ concept in the exhibition’s title, but is also a reference to the fictional character from the work ‘Palazzo Gundane (homage to the myth-maker who fell to earth)’. This work pays tribute to a fake news story about a South African musician named Boomtown Gundane, who allegedly made a song titled ‘Yes We Do’ in response to the charity single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ In Young’s fictional recreation, Boomtown Gundane has toured the world with this response song. 這些展覽海報不單表現了「世界巡迴演」的概念,亦與作品《Palazzo Gundane (homage to the myth-maker who fell to earth)》中的虛構人物「Boomtown Gundane」有關連。

The next M+ exhibition, straight from the Venice Biennale: ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief World Tour’! 🎺🎺 . Conceived by multidisciplinary Hong Kong artist Samson Young, ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief World Tour’ offers a unique audiovisual experience with sculptures, objects, videos, sound installations, and site-specific pieces. The ‘songs for disaster relief’ in the title refers to charity singles—purpose-made recordings to raising funds and awareness for charitable causes. In this exhibition, Young draws on this genre and explores the ideologies behind it. 🎤🎧 . In 2017, Young represented Hong Kong with the premiere of this exhibition at the 57th Venice Biennale under the title ‘Samson Young: Songs for Disaster Relief’. You’ll see that the Hong Kong version is slightly different—with new settings, new layouts, and even a new artwork! . When: 09.02.2018 – 06.05.2018 Where: M+ Pavilion . Image: 'Palazzo Gundane (homage to the myth-maker who fell to earth)', 2017. Coming soon to David Zwirner Hong Kong: an exhibition by Wolfgang Tillmans, presenting recent developments in his portraiture and still lifes along with figurative scenes and abstract photographs. Featuring many new works not publicly shown before, the show will juxtapose pictures of intimacy and friendship with views of the world at large. Dates: March 26–May 12, 2018. Join us for the private view at the gallery on Monday, March 26, 6–8 PM. … Few artists have shaped the scope of contemporary art and influenced a younger generation more than Tillmans. Since the early 1990s, his works have epitomized a new kind of subjectivity in photography, pairing intimacy and playfulness with social critique and the persistent questioning of existing values and hierarchies. His practice continues to address the fundamental question of what it means to create pictures in an increasingly image-saturated world. … On March 28, join Tillmans at the gallery for a signing of the accompanying exhibition catalogue. Pat Steir’s new series, “For Hong Kong” (2017–2018), was created in homage to the artistic and literary heritage of East Asian cultures. Distinguished by a vertical, central fissure that the artist refers to as a “split,” Steir’s paintings are part of an ongoing body of work called “Kairos,” which debuted in September 2017 in an exhibition at our New York gallery. Her signature pouring technique reflects Steir’s intuitive relationship with Eastern thought, disclosing a Zen-like emptiness that simultaneously suggests a sensuous fullness. – – Lévy Gorvy is presenting four of the works from Steir’s new series at Art Basel Hong Kong, including ‘Blue Mauve for Hong Kong’, pictured above. – Art Basel Hong Kong, March 29 – 31, Hong Kong, Convention & Exhibition Centre – #LévyGorvy #LevyGorvy #PatSteir #Steir #ABHK #ArtBaselHongKong #BaselHongKong #ABHK2018 #HKCEC

"Something There and Never There 那是有又沒有" Leung Chi Wo 梁志和 – 23.1 – 10.3.2018 – Opening Reception:20.1.2018, Saturday, 4 – 6:30pm Artist will be present. – “Something There and Never There” is the solo exhibition of Leung Chi Wo, centred around the tumultuous year of 1967 in Hong Kong. Linking his own biography to the history of the city, Leung constructs parallel worlds that connect vastly different events, characters and objects together. Civilian riots and vintage Volkswagen, student protests and Charlie Chaplin’s film, political propaganda and songs by The Beatles: they all crossed paths by coincidence without our knowledge or entering into official history. By using diverse media including photography, video, and installations comprising of found images, music and objects from 1967, Leung performs a deep engagement with a subjective history through archival research, conceptual intervention and poetic re-imagination. The artist demonstrates that history is full of ambivalence, absurdity and ambiguities, and that through re-enacting and reconstructing these episodes in 1967, one can as well reflect on the current socio-political situation in Hong Kong. – Details 詳情: blindspotgallery.com/exhibition/something-there-and-never-there #Blindspotgallery #hongkongartist #LeungChiWo #梁志和 #1967riots #hongkonghistory #installation #photography #thebeatles #propaganda #charliechaplin #volkswagenbeetle
